Muizzu by His Side, PM Modi Gets 21-Gun Salute at Maldives Independence Day Event

adminBy adminJuly 25, 20252 Mins Read

In a symbolic and politically significant moment, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand 21-gun salute during the Maldives’ Independence Day celebrations in Malé on Friday, with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu standing by his side. The ceremonial honor, reserved for distinguished state guests, marked a turning point in India-Maldives relations, which had experienced turbulence in recent months.

This year’s Independence Day celebration was particularly special, commemorating 60 years since the Maldives gained independence from British rule in 1965. The presence of PM Modi as the chief guest underlined renewed diplomatic warmth between the two countries following months of strained exchanges and maritime tensions.

The event began with a spectacular military parade held at the Republic Square, where PM Modi and President Muizzu jointly took the salute. The 21-gun salute, echoing over the Indian Ocean, was accompanied by the national anthems of both countries and a fly-past by the Maldivian National Defence Force.

Addressing the gathering later in the day, President Muizzu acknowledged the importance of India’s role in the Maldives’ development. “We welcome Prime Minister Modi with respect and hope to build a future of mutual respect and cooperation,” he said.

PM Modi, speaking at the commemorative banquet, emphasized the Indian Ocean’s shared destiny. “India and Maldives are not just neighbors—we are natural partners in progress and prosperity. Let this celebration be the beginning of a new chapter of trust and togetherness,” he stated.

The visit comes after both leaders agreed to recalibrate ties earlier this year, following controversies surrounding Indian military presence and social media spats between Maldivian ministers and Indian citizens. In a diplomatic breakthrough, India completed the withdrawal of its military personnel from the Maldives in May 2025, replacing them with technical teams under a mutual agreement.

Observers say Modi’s participation in the Independence Day event and the accompanying honors signify a reset in the bilateral narrative, one driven by diplomacy, regional cooperation, and mutual strategic interests.

The day concluded with a cultural showcase featuring performances from both Maldivian and Indian artists, celebrating the nations’ deep-rooted cultural ties.

With the ceremonial salute and high-level talks now behind them, both leaders are expected to initiate several joint infrastructure and climate resilience projects in the months ahead, signaling a cooperative and stable era in the India-Maldives partnership.
