India Calls US Religious Freedom Panel an ‘Entity of Concern’, Rejects Its Report

    March 26, 20253 Mins Read

The Indian government has strongly dismissed the recent report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), calling it biased and lacking credibility. India labeled the USCIRF an “entity of concern” and rejected its findings as interference in the country’s internal affairs.

The USCIRF report, released earlier this week, criticized India for alleged violations of religious freedoms and recommended that the US State Department designate India as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC). The report cited instances of discrimination against religious minorities and the alleged misuse of laws such as the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against dissenters.

    India’s Response

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a sharp rebuttal, stating that the USCIRF has a history of making prejudiced assessments regarding religious freedom in India. “The USCIRF cricketteammatchscorecard  continues to propagate a misleading and biased narrative against India. It has no locus standi to comment on our internal affairs. We categorically reject its report,” the MEA spokesperson said.

India also pointed out that the commission’s approach is politically motivated and influenced by vested interests. “The USCIRF has repeatedly demonstrated an agenda-driven outlook rather than an objective assessment of facts,” the spokesperson added.

    Past Contentions

This is not the first time India has dismissed USCIRF’s reports. The commission has consistently placed India in its watchlist over alleged religious intolerance, leading to repeated diplomatic pushback from New Delhi. Indian officials have argued that the country remains  vistasventures committed to religious pluralism and democratic values, with constitutional safeguards in place to protect minority rights.

    USCIRF’s Position

The USCIRF, an independent, bipartisan US federal commission, has maintained that religious freedom conditions in India have deteriorated in recent years. It claims that government policies and rhetoric have contributed to an environment of hostility against minorities. The commission has urged the US topdecoratoradvice.com administration to impose targeted sanctions on Indian officials allegedly responsible for religious persecution.

    Impact on US-India Relations

Despite such reports, India and the US continue to maintain strong strategic ties across multiple domains, including defense, trade, and technology. Experts suggest that while the USCIRF’s recommendations carry symbolic weight, they are unlikely to significantly impact diplomatic relations. Washington has largely avoided acting on the commission’s calls to designate India as a CPC, recognizing India’s geopolitical significance and democratic framework.

    Conclusion

India’s rejection of the USCIRF report reflects its broader stance on external criticism of its domestic affairs. As both nations navigate their complex yet growing partnership, such differences over human rights and religious freedoms may continue to surface but are unlikely to derail the broader trajectory of US-India relations.
