Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi, known for his versatile performances across genres, recently shared candid views about the challenges of staging an Adolescence-style show in India. Speaking during a promotional event for his upcoming project, Hashmi revealed that while he finds the idea of creating a coming-of-age, youthful drama appealing, executing such a large-scale show in India would be a “logistical nightmare.”
The Adolescence reference comes from the popular genre of American television shows centered around teenage life — full of elaborate sets, expansive casts, intricate story arcs, and high production values. Hashmi pointed out that replicating that format in India involves significant hurdles, particularly when it comes to budgeting, location management, casting authentic young actors, and meeting the evolving expectations of today’s audience.

“In India, we have an incredibly diverse youth culture,” Hashmi said. “Trying to bottle that up into a polished, binge-worthy series like they do in the West is no small feat. You’re dealing with different languages, social backdrops, school systems — it’s almost impossible to authentically capture it all without facing production chaos.”
He further elaborated on issues such as acquiring permissions for shoots in real schools or urban areas, coordinating large ensembles of teen actors (many of whom would still be students themselves), and ensuring the show aligns with India’s cultural sensitivities. “One misstep, and you’re caught between censorship issues and backlash on social media,” he added.
Hashmi, however, remains optimistic. He believes that with the right team, detailed groundwork, and support from streaming platforms willing to take creative risks, an Indian Adolescence-style show could eventually happen. “It would require vision, patience, and a willingness to embrace the beautiful messiness of Indian teenage life,” he said with a smile.
Fans on social media reacted to Hashmi’s remarks with enthusiasm, many expressing their hope that he might be involved in producing or even starring in such a project someday. Given his evolving career — from “serial kisser” roles to more layered, mature performances — Emraan Hashmi seems perfectly poised to champion stories that reflect the raw, unfiltered spirit of Indian adolescence.
Whether or not he takes that challenge head-on remains to be seen. But one thing’s clear: Emraan has once again sparked a conversation about the untapped potential of Indian youth-centric storytelling.
