Are RCB over-reliant on Virat Kohli? CSK coach Stephen Fleming reacts

    March 28, 20252 Mins Read

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have long been associated with Virat Kohli’s exceptional batting prowess. His consistent performances have often been the backbone of the team’s campaigns in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, this heavy reliance on a single player has sparked discussions about the team’s overall balance and strategy.

Former India pacer Varun Aaron highlighted this concern during the 2024 IPL season, emphasizing the need for RCB’s domestic players to elevate their performances. He stated, “It’s just that RCB are not finding the rhythm; the domestic players are just not stepping up… you cannot always rely on topdecoratoradvice Virat Kohli. The other guys have to step up.”

Echoing similar sentiments, former Australian captain Aaron Finch pointed out the necessity for RCB to find an explosive middle-order batsman to complement Kohli. He remarked, “They just need to find a partnership with him; they need to find an explosive middle-order player who is in form.”

In response to such critiques, RCB has made strategic moves to diversify their lineup. The appointment of Rajat Patidar as the new captain for the 2025 IPL season is a significant step in this direction. RCB head coach Andy Flower praised Patidar’s leadership qualities, expressing confidence in his ability to navigate the challenges of leading a major IPL franchise.

Additionally, the acquisition of England all-rounder Liam Livingstone is expected to bolster the team’s batting strength. Livingstone expressed enthusiasm about joining RCB, vistasventures noting that the conditions at Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium would suit his playing style better than his previous stint with Punjab. He looks forward to playing alongside Kohli and aims to contribute significantly to RCB’s quest for their maiden IPL title.

While RCB’s dependence on Kohli has been a topic of debate, it’s noteworthy that this isn’t a recent discussion. Back in 2019, Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming addressed similar concerns, stating, “One man doesn’t win the IPL. It’s a tough competition to win.”

As the 2025 IPL season approaches, RCB’s strategic changes reflect an awareness of the need for a more balanced team dynamic. By reducing over-reliance on any single player and fostering a more collaborative team environment, RCB aims to enhance their performance and strive for their elusive first IPL championship.
