Aanand L Rai Slams Re-Release of Raanjhanaa With AI-Powered Climax: “Let Stories Rest With Dignity”

Filmmaker Aanand L Rai, known for his nuanced storytelling and emotionally layered cinema, has voiced his strong disapproval of the re-release of his 2013 cult romantic drama Raanjhanaa, now featuring an AI-generated alternate climax. The re-edited version, which recently surfaced in select screenings and digital circuits, has sparked a heated debate over the use of artificial intelligence in modifying classic narratives without the original creator’s involvement or consent.

Rai, who directed the film starring Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor, and Abhay Deol, expressed both shock and disappointment in a public statement. “I poured my soul into Raanjhanaa, and every frame was a product of deep conviction and emotion. To see it altered by AI—especially the climax, which was the heart of the story—is heartbreaking. Let stories rest with dignity,” he said.

The controversial AI-generated ending reportedly rewrites the film’s poignant and tragic final moments, offering instead a more “audience-pleasing” resolution, where the lead character survives and is reunited with his love. While some viewers have embraced this version as “modernized and hopeful,” purists and cinema lovers have called it a “betrayal of artistic integrity.”

Rai further criticized the practice of tampering with completed works, warning that AI should be a tool to empower creativity—not distort it. “Cinema is not a sandbox for experimentation without context. Technology must not override artistic intention,” he added.

Several members of the film fraternity have rallied behind Rai, including writer Himanshu Sharma, who penned Raanjhanaa, calling the re-edit “an erasure of emotional truth.” Social media has been abuzz with hashtags like #RespectOriginals and #RaanjhanaaWasPerfect trending, reflecting the audience’s mixed response to the AI version.

As the debate continues, Raanjhanaa becomes yet another example in the ongoing battle between art and algorithm—raising urgent questions about creative ownership in the age of artificial intelligence.
